Course Description:
This laboratory course is an introduction to the techniques commonly used in the organic and bio chemistry laboratory. Introduces basic laboratory techniques; such as distillation, crystallization, extraction, chromatography, characterization by physical methods, purification, and characterization of products from Microscale syntheses.
Course Topics:
Safety guideline and survival manual in chemistry laboratory
Chemical and biological laboratory glassware (how to use pipet, flasks, condensers, etc.)
Chemical laboratory devices (how to use balance, centrifuge, pH meter, etc.)
Preparing solutions with exact concentration (calculation and procedure)
Introduction to laboratory analysis devices (HPLC, GC, UV-Vis spectroscopy, etc.)
Alkene synthesis and reaction workup
Molecular weight determination
Synthesis of Aspirin
Synthesis of esters
PBS solution preparation
Study of enzymatic reactions(titration)
The course aims to:
Use various laboratory equipment to generate data
Demonstrate their critical thinking, scientific and logical reasoning
Assemble glassware and perform the following techniques as a part of synthetic procedures: aqueous workup, distillation, reflux, separation, isolation, and crystallization.
Utilize mathematical knowledge gained from general chemistry to perform common calculations
Write a formal lab report
Engage in safe laboratory practices by handling laboratory glassware, equipment, and chemical reagents appropriately, using general guidelines and basic knowledge about the common hazards associated with them in an organic chemistry laboratory
